‘Tis the season?

Have you ever thought about the words you’re singing as you belt out that Christmas carol?

“Troll the ancient Yuletide carole”
-Deck the Halls
I’m not trolling anything.

“You better not shout. You better not cry. He’s gonna find out who’s naughty or nice…. He sees you when you’re sleeping. He knows when you’re awake.”
-Santa Claus is Coming to Town
Apparently, Santa is either omniscient or the neighborhood pedophile.

“I saw three ships come sailing in On Christmas Day on Christmas Day.”
-I Saw Three Ships
Who cares what you saw?

The Little Drummer Boy: If you can sing the words to this song (other than PA-rum pa pum PUM!) I’ll give you a dollar.

“Oh, bring us a figgy pudding and a cup of good cheer. We won’t go until we got some; We won’t go until we got some; We won’t go until we got some, so bring some out here.”
- We Wish You a Merry Christmas
If they really wanted to wish me a Merry Christmas, they’d be good guests.

I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus
Talk about repressed childhood memories. That one’ll scar.

…and what is “Excelsis Deo,” anyway?

Please leave your own Yuletide quandaries.
