geek squad needed part two
So the last time I requested geek help, it was a minor blog problem. Now let me tell you a tale of heartbreak and frustration, and an Indian guy named Pajil (I couldn’t exactly hear him correctly so there’s a good likelihood that’s not actually his name).
Jubilant after my last final Friday, I turned off my computer, packed it up, and boarded Amtrak for a fun ride up to Fresno for a wedding on Sunday. My friend who I was staying with happened to be in the bridal party; Saturday night, while she was at the rehearsal dinner, I fired up the old lappy.
Or rather, I tried to. The led lights came on, the fan started whirring… and nothing. Numerous attempts to get lappy to boot up ensued. I made it to various points of boot up, even making it to the desktop occasionally. The monitor would start going crazy – dashed horizontal lines would start pushing across, lappy would freeze, and frustrated I’d turn lappy off and try again.
On the few occasions that I made it too the desktop, I ran Lavasoft, Spybot, and Norton – nothing. All clear. Defragging? Even though it said I didn’t need it, I did it anyway – and it froze 3% into it. I even tried System Restore to last Tuesday – still nothing. Now I can’t even get my laptop to get to the Compaq screen. And I just finished a lovely conversation with Pajil on tech support, who told me I could mail in my computer and have it repaired for the low, low price of $298.
Here’s the kicker: I’ve been able to back up all my photos and my documents…not my music or programs that I know I’d have to reload. I’m really tempted to consider the music lost, and have to reload the programs (as well as redownload Norton Antivirus, I don’t know how cool they are with that) and use the black disk of death and wipe everything. I suppose that is my last resort.
So, if you’re technologically inclined, and you’d like to save me $167 [cost of visiting Geek Squad at Best Buy]…holla.
